In anticipation of the fourth heatwave this summer, the UK government has issued updated public health guidance, which includes a temporary outdoor restriction for individuals with naturally red hair.
The decision, described as a “targeted protective measure,” comes after forecasters warned of UV levels “sufficient to cook an unattended ginger in under 12 minutes.”
A spokesperson for the Met Office said:
“While all citizens are advised to take precautions during extreme heat, those with genetic vulnerability to sunlight—namely, redheads—are encouraged to remain indoors, preferably in a north-facing basement.”
Retailers are experiencing shortages of SPF products strong enough to meet ginger-grade UV classifications, prompting guidance for redheads to avoid direct sunlight entirely.
The guidance is expected to remain in place until mid-August, or until the UV index drops below ‘crispy.’
