The government has confirmed that drivers who consistently occupy the middle lane without cause will be enrolled in upcoming vehicle collision trials. Officials described the move as “a practical reallocation of resources.”
Participants will be fitted with monitoring equipment and placed in vehicles during controlled impact studies. A spokesperson said the data will “help improve safety for responsible motorists,” though none of the subjects are expected to drive again.
The programme is intended to discourage middle lane misuse by making the consequences unavoidable for those selected, and by establishing a clear precedent for future offenders.
Similar measures are being considered for drivers who fail to indicate at roundabouts.
